The campus was deemed "Academically Acceptable" by the Texas Education Agency under its accountability ratings in 2008-2009. The district's only middle school made "Adequate Yearly Progress" in student performance and accountability in 2008-2009 under No Child Left Behind. On the 2009 TAKS, 72% of 6th-grade students met or exceeded standards in math, lower than the state average of 80%. In reading, 94%, higher than the state average of 91%. In 7th-grade, 80% of students met or exceeded standards in math, higher than the state average of 79%. In reading, 82%, lower than the state average of 84%. In writing, 92%, lower than the state average of 93%. In 8th-grade, 83% of students met or exceeded standards in math, lower than the state average of 84%. In reading, 98%, higher than the state average of 95%. In science, 75%, higher than the state average of 72%; in social studies, 93%, higher than the state average of 92%. The purple-and-gold Mustangs compete in football, golf, volleyball, tennis, and cross country, as well as boys' track and basketball and girls' basketball and track. Clubs and extracurricular activities include band, cheerleading, choir, Creative Problem Solving, Junior FFA, student council, theater arts, and UIL academics. The middle school has benefited from building renovations
in recent years, including a sprawling new library unveiled in 2009-2010. The school was an "Exemplary" campus in 2008-2009 under the Texas Education Agency's accountability ratings, the highest recognition bestowed on a Texas public school. Spicewood Elementary also earned five of the district's 11 gold performance awards for testing on TAKS exams.
