Neighbor A Superhero…

Nancy Vignon is now considered a super hero. She doesn’t wear a cape or
tights and save small children from hungry alligators, but she is a real
super hero. The type of hero who puts her life on the line for the sake of
others. She is a retired nurse who spent the majority of her life helping
patients. And now, at 72, she saved the lives of her Horseshoe Bay neighbors
last weekend. Almarie Ann and Christopher Smith decided to take an afternoon
nap on Aug. 3 after running errands in their 1992 Chevrolet Caprice Classic
in the blazing sun. The heat and extreme dryness convinced them to head
indoors for a rest. Having only been out of the car for about 15 minutes and
starting to drift into a deep slumber, they were awakened by loud banging
and shrill screams coming from their front door. “It was terrifying,”
Almarie said of the banging on the door. “I thought somebody had died.”
Thankfully that was not the case, but the cause of the disturbance is still
life-changing. Vignon had just awoken from an afternoon nap of her own when
she says she “heard a popping sound. Like a kid’s cap gun, only
bigger.” Looking out her window in the direction of the noise, she saw
smoke pouring out of Smith’s car, parked next to the house. With a second
glance, she noticed flames were coming out beneath the front of the vehicle.
