Literacy Highland Lakes holds Big Books Program

The Literacy Highland Lakes is holding its annual Big Books Program in several area locations as well as distributing donated books in the month of December.

Volunteers will be meeting at libraries to read to children in several locations this month, including the Herman Brown Free Library in Burnet on Tuesday, Dec. 11 at 10:30 a.m., Kingsland Library on Wednesday, Dec. 12 at 4:30 p.m., Marble Falls Public Library on Thursday, Dec. 13 at 10 a.m. and Bertram Library on Tuesday, Dec. 20 at 10:30 a.m.

"The Big Books Program gets parents to read to their kids,” said Literacy Highland Lakes Director Sally May. "This year we’re holding it in libraries during story time.”

The organization is collaborating with Starbucks, which collected used children’s books in area locations. The books will be given out to children between preschool and second grade ages who attend the readings accompanied by a parent. More books will be given out to organizations in the area which benefit children including the Boys and Girls Club Highland Lakes, the Helping Center of Marble Falls and the Angel Tree program in Spicewood.

May said that although normally Literacy Highland Lakes is a GED, ESL and citizenship program, the Big Books Program is heavily related to adult literacy.

"It’s very important for parents to understand that they need to read to their kids,” she said. "It helps them to become better students.”
