EDC board member enters council race

February 21, 2013, 10:00 pm by Adam Troxtell

George "Butch” Kemper, current member of the Marble Falls Economic Development Corporation (EDC) board, has entered the race for Marble Falls City Council.

Kemper, 68, filed for the election on Tuesday. If elected, Kemper would become another EDC director to serve on city council. Currently, EDC Board President John Packer and director Jane Marie Hurst sit on both.

Kemper said it was important for the EDC and city council to have a close relationship.

"In both EDC and city council, some amount of continuity is very important,” he said. "Also, the city council appoints EDC directors, so the EDC serves at the pleasure of the council. It’s important that relationship be very close, so we know what they’re doing and they know what we’re doing.”

Kemper is the only person to file for one of three spots up for grabs in the city council election on May 11. The final date to file is March 1.

Actually, no more than 3 City Council members can sit on the EDC board of directors at one time.

It is to my understanding that the EDC can only have two appointed members from the council to sit on their board. So if he is elected one of the three named here will have to step down. As far as him wanting a close relationship between the council and EDC. Isnt that kind of like the Fox guarding the hen house.

Thank you for pointing that out.So 3 council members can sit on the board. Instead of a Fox guarding the hen house its Foxes are guarding the hen house. Sounds like a lot of missing eggs in that coop.
