MFISD tax shift up for Saturday vote

School officials are currently looking at a net deficit of just over $400,000 in the 2012-13 Marble Falls ISD budget unless voters decide to back a tax shift that could make up for the shortfall in Saturday’s election.

The draft budget was presented at the school board meeting Monday night, and it accounts for a $2.2 million decrease in revenues. The budget is based on a maintenance and operations (M&O) tax rate of $1.04, but if voters approve the district's tax shift in an election Aug. 25, that rate would go up to $1.0533.

In the same move, the district would reduce their interest and sinking tax rate by 2.33 cents, and 1.33 cents of that will move to M&O. This results in an overall tax decrease from $1.29 to $1.28 per $100 valuation but expands the amount of money the district can spend outside of their debt service.

State law mandates districts must hold an election any time their M&O tax rate exceeds $1.04.

All voting for those in the Marble Falls school district takes place at the central office, located at 1800 Colt Circle in the Community Room. Electionday voting takes place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

"If for some reason the tax ratification election does not pass, we will continue working through the budget as we go into the school year,” Superintendent Robert O’Connor said.

Here we go again, more so called "Budget" problems with schools. Every few months we hear the same old issue, we need more $$$ for our schools! Well, here is a real thought, stop paying for the thousands of kids who are here ILLEGALLY, and cut your spending on foolish things. If a family has a budget problem we cut back so why not the schools? You don't have a INCOME problem, you again have a SPENDING problem!

This is actually a situation where people can vote to DECREASE taxes. A yes vote increases the maintenance and operation tax but DECREASES the interest tax rate. That results in an overall one cent per $100 tax decrease -- not much but at least it's a state. We need to vote for it!
