2 MFISD seats up in May

Two Marble Falls Independent School Board incumbents intend to run again for their seats that come open in May as the school district announces procedures for anyone interested in filing for those at-large posts.

The school district will hold a regular election on May 11, and those interested in running can now read information about applying for the positions as well as find the application for entering the election on the Marble Falls ISD website.

The two school board positions are currently held by Mike Savage, in Place One, and Karl Westerman, in Place Two. Both won reelection in 2010.

Savage, who is in his second three-year term on the school board, said he has a deep desire to run for reelection so he can continue to work toward a goal he had when he first ran for a school board place.

"I want to stay,” Savage said. "We’re working to upgrade the career and technology department, which is important to me and beneficial to the kids. I wanted input on that, and that’s why I ran for the school board in the first place.”

Westerman said he also wants to complete various projects the board is working toward and will be running again. Westerman has served on the school board since 2000.

"We’re undertaking some big initiatives, and I want to see those through,” he said. "It’s really important to have locally elected officials to look out for the best interests of the schools in our community. The state puts so many mandates and restrictions on school districts; we’ve got to work hard to find the areas we can affect and do so in the best interests of our area.”
