Daniel M. Kelly, M.D May 23, 1936 ~ Nov. 25, 2012November 16, 2012, 9:01 am by Staff Reports
He was born May 23, 1936, in Algona, Iowa. He was the eldest of three children born to Edward Daniel and Margaret (Mitchell) Kelly. He spent much of his childhood on Lake Okoboji where he developed his passion for water sports and his sailboat "Herself.” Kelly graduated from Emmetsburg High School, attended Notre Dame and later graduated from Creighton Medical School. He began his medical career in Emmetsburg, Iowa and later opened his own practice in Burnet. Kelly was still practicing medicine in Houston until weeks before his death. His family and service to his community were a top priority in his life. He married Karen Leitch in January 1971 in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Together they had four children: three amazing daughters and a fourth who was fairly decent. Kelly spent many of his later years inspiring people at the Men’s Center in Houston. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother John Edward Kelly. He is survived by sister Margaret Ann "Peg” (Kelly) Baehr and her husband Mike; sister-in-law Betty (Kelly) Spies; four daughters and sons-in-law Mike and Laura Pope of Chandler, Texas, Peter and Meg Anderson of College Station, Chad and Sarah Walsh of Fulshear, Texas, and Greg and Amy Schielack of College Station; six grandchildren; many treasured nieces and nephews; and his companion Taxi Cat. Friends are invited to visitation with the family from 6-8:00 p.m., with a Rosary beginning at 7 p.m., on Thursday, Nov. 29 at Earthman Bellaire Funeral Home, 6700 Ferris, Bellaire, Texas. Funeral Mass will be celebrated in his honor at 10 a.m., Friday, Nov. 30, at the All Saints Catholic Church, 215 E. 10th St. in Houston, where he was a member. Graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 1 at St. John Catholic Cemetery in Emmetsburg, Iowa. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Dr. Daniel Kelly’s honor to The Men’s Center, 3809 Main St, Houston, Texas 77002. Reader CommentsDr. Kelly was a wonderful man, and a great Doctor. He delivered my first child and was a big support to me as I was going thru a rough marriage. He always had time to listen, and treated me so good. I am keeping all of you in my prayers.
