She was born on April 22, 1917, in Montgomery County in Stewart, Miss. Rivers was the third of the seven daughters born to James Yancy Peacock and Lula Mae Pace Peacock.
She married James Edward Rivers on Aug. 31, 1935 in Montgomery County in Winona, Miss. From this union, there were two children, Ma’Joyce, born July 5, 1936 and James Ju’Ward, Aug. 21, 1937. They divorced in 1950, and she never remarried.
Rivers was employed by the government Civil Service from 1941 until her retirement in 1981. She began her career as a parachute rigger at Greenville Air Force Base, Miss. She transferred to other military installation during her career of packing parachutes and training others to do so. She retired from service at Fort Hood as a Master Parachute Rigger and shop supervisor.
In 1996, she moved from Killeen to Llano to be near her daughter and family, and to spend some
good years living on the Llano River, tending to her many flowers and fruit trees, listening to the birds singing and enjoying other nature in the area. She was happy there and remained active and independent until her health deteriorated so as to need care.
We thank the wonderful caregivers, especially Nicole for this past year; she has been such a friend to us all.
Survivors include daughter Ma’Joyce Swope and husband Bill of Llano; son James Ju’Ward Rivers and wife Therese of Westlake, Ohio; grandchildren Donna Swope of Llano, Michelle Rivers of Westlake, Melissa Ellen Rivers of Oregon, and James J. Rivers, Jr. of Texas; sisters Velia Mae Rivers of Stewart, Miss., and Cynthia Elizabeth Faulkner of Waxahachie, Texas; and many nieces and nephews to miss her loving care who recall fun times spent with her through the years.
Rivers is preceded in death by her parents; grandparents John Calvin Pace and Rebecca Elizabeth Buckner Pace, and David Arnold Peacock and Cynthia Richardson Peacock; two sisters died in infancy in 1909 and in 1912; sisters Thelma Marie Oates (Bill) in 1963 and Bessie Rebecca Pogue (Russell) in 2004; nephew E. G. Rivers in 1962; and James Edward Rivers died in 1984.
A celebration of Mildred’s life will be held in May in Mississippi.
