He was born on Aug. 21, 1952 in Lubbock to Jimmy Barto and Jennie Lee Shipman Miller. Miller was only four years old when his father passed. His mother remarried Riley George Loper, better know to family and friends as "Red” Loper. Miller had such love and respect for him, and referred to him as his Dad.
The family settled in the Round Rock and Austin area. He graduated from Round Rock High School in 1971. Upon graduation he joined "Red” in learning and working as a concrete contractor. Many structures in the Austin area can be credited to Miller and his crew. He continued his profession with his own company GKM Concrete Specialist, focusing mainly on commercial building projects. Miller married Janis Darlene Farr in 1986 and they resided in Burnet. They welcomed their daughter Meagan Gay Miller into the world on Oct. 5, 1986.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, golf and fireworks. He was a weekend fishing guide on Lake Buchanan for a few years, and was known as "the gentlemen of the lake” as he would often share with the other guides where he ran into "the stripers.” He became a licensed pyrotechnician in order to shoot commercial fireworks. The more he learned, the more he developed a true passion for the shows. In addition, his gardens were some of the most manicured around, and produced abundant vegetables and fruits. The family gathered at harvest time to help with the canning. Everyone enjoyed being together and working with one another. He shared with numerous friends and neighbors. He was always feeding somebody.
Miller was preceded in death by his father Riley "Red” Loper, brother Jimmy Dwayne Miller, and his wife Janice passed from the earth on May 2, 1998.
Survivors include his wife of 14 years Elizabeth (Kay) Miller of Burnet; daughter Meagan Gay Miller of Austin; in-laws James and Jeannine Ketchum of Burnet; mother Jennie Lee Loper of Austin; sister Gloria Jean Goode of Austin; his brother-in-law Randy Goode of Lampasas; sister in-law Bonnie Miller of Austin; nephews Jeff and Greg Lindberg of Ft. Worth, and Lance and Rowdy Goode of Austin; niece Tracy Bird of Meridian, Ind., and many cousins who all recall fun times spent with him through the years.
Visitation was held at Putnam Funeral Home on Thursday, Feb. 14, from 5-7 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 15 at 10:30 a.m., at Putnam Funeral Home in Kingsland, with Pastor Grady Roe of Highland Lakes United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow at Bluffton Cemetery in Llano County. An online guest register may be signed at www.Putnam- Cares.com.
