Della E. Douglas Oct. 17, 1920 ~ Feb. 17, 2013
Della Elizabeth Douglas, 92, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 17 at the Kingsland Hills Care Center in Kingsland.
She was born on Oct. 17, 1920 in Aubry, Texas, to Verna and Artie Williams Burns. She grew up in Texas and she graduated from Aubry High School in Tarrant County, Texas. After high school she began her career of raising children and caring for her family.
Douglas married John S. Bearden in 1937 in Palo Pinto County, Texas.
They were happily married until he was struck by lightning and died. She was widowed and had two small sons, John D. and Raymond.
In 1941, she met and later married D.V. Smith in Fort Worth. She was blessed to receive Joan as a stepdaughter that she counted as her own. She and D. V. then had D.H., Vickie and Bobby Max.
She married Autry Douglas in Houston where they resided until they both retired from Kroger Grocery Company and moved to Stamps, Ark. They resided there until moving to Kingsland in 2004 due to health issues. Autry passed away in 2010.
Douglas loved the Lord with all her heart and read her Bible every day. She raised her children with Christian values and beliefs that they have passed on to their children. She was a member of Walnut Methodist Church in Round Mountain.
She was a "Jill of all Trades.” She worked any and every job needed to care for and help to support her family. From waitress to custom sewing of clothing and draperies to baking at a
grocery store – no job was beneath her in order to care for her family. She had two green thumbs and anything she planted grew and flourished. She was an avid gardener, and she took great pride in her flower and vegetable gardens. She supplied her family with fresh and preserved vegetables until she was in her late 80s.
Douglas was preceded in death by her parents; three husbands; son Bobby Max Smith; sister Clara Mae Hagood; and brother Verna Mac Burns.
She is survived by sons Raymond L. Bearden of Kingsland, John and wife Judy Bearden of Salida, Colo., and D. H. and wife Ida Smith of Kingsland; daughters Joan and husband Paul Smith Hillman of Houston, and Vickie and husband Darryl Smith Neutzler of Carmine, Texas; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
