Marble Falls settles for second place

By Mark Goodson

Highlander Sports Editor

Leander’s Zack Noska and Garrett Venner combined for five hits and four RBI to lead the Lions to a 6-3 win over Marble Falls Saturday in the regular season finale for both team at Marble Falls.

Noska, who bats third, and Venner, the cleanup hitter for the Lions, kept the bats hot all day as the Lions spoiled Marble Falls’ chances at the District 25-4A title.

Marble Falls lost its final two games against the Lions and Dripping Springs beat Cedar Park twice in the same span.

Marble Falls (21-7 and 13-5) will represent the district as the No. 2 seed against an Austin ISD school in the bi-district round of the playoffs.

Leadner will be the third seed and Dripping Springs the top seed. Vista Ridge nailed down the fourth spot.

Leander broke the game open in the top of the seventh inning when Venner smashed an RBI triple off Cole Ridgely to right field to break a 3-3 tie. Ridgely, the winning pitcher on Tuesday in a complete game, gutted out a gritty performance.

Ridgely scattered nine hits with eight strikeouts and walked two.

But an infield single by Taylor Sugar, a walk and Venner’s triple chased the Marble Falls senior.

Stacy Heinatz came on in relief and Noska greeted the hard-throwing Heinatz with another triple to push the score to 5-3. Patrick Glaze, the losing pitcher in Game 1 of the series, singled in Noska for the 6-3 score.

Marble Falls loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but Domenic Patterson   struck out against Leander’s Matt Falloon to end the game

Falloon pitched a complete game and allowed eight hits, one walk and struck out eight Mustangs.

Marble Falls’ Heinatz and Jimmy Damico both had two hits each and second baseman Mike Richardson had a clutch hit to help the Mustangs to a 3-run third inning. Richardson drove in two runs with a solid single.

Marble Falls led 3-1 after three innings, but Leander tandem of Venner and Noska provide RBI-hits in the fifth to tie the game at 3-3.

Leander was the only team in the district to take a series against the Mustangs in district play.

Marble Falls had solo district losses to Cedar Park, Vista Ridge and Dripping Springs before losing its final two against Leander.

Marble Falls wins opener, 9-0

By Mark Goodson

Highlander Sports Editor

The rivalry between Marble Falls and Dripping Springs has heated up.

On Friday night, the two baseball teams will meet for a second time with the leadership in the District 25-4A on the line.

Expect the normal chatter coming out of the dugouts to be curtailed Friday at Marble Falls.

Earlier this week, Marble Falls scored a 9-0 win over Dripping Springs at Dripping Springs Tuesday behind a solid pitching performance from Cody Goodman and a big night from the bottom of the Marble Falls batting lineup.

On Monday night, the Dripping Springs Sports and Recreation complex was vandalized with graffitti.

That just heated up the rivalry between the only two schools from District 25-4A that are one-school towns.

The teams will take the field 7 p.m. Friday with Marble Falls looking for its 20th win of the season. Marble Falls is 19-4 overall and 11-2 in district. Dripping Springs is 10-3 in district after its opening loss to Marble Falls.

The finale of the 3-game series is 2 p.m. Saturday.

Marble Falls senior outfielder Jay Watson drove in three runs on Tuesday for the Mustangs and second baseman Mike Richardson had a big RBI single in the game.

Marble Falls led 4-0 midway through the third.

Marble Falls will come back on Friday with ace Cole Ridgely ready to go. The senior righthander has been a roll through district play.

Both teams went 2-1 last week in key series.

Marble Falls dropped its opener to Vista Ridge on Friday on the road and then came back to win a doubleheader on Saturday at Marble Falls.

Leander’s Lions salvaged a 8-5 win in Game 3 against Dripping Springs. Dripping Springs won the first two games 4-1 and 8-5.

On Saturday Marble Falls scratched and clawed to win 5-4 in the opener of the doubleheader and then put away the Rangers 7-5 in the final game of the series. Marble Falls rallied to win both games.

Ace Ridgely allowed eight hits, struck out six and walked two in picking up the first win Saturday. Ridgely had to hang on to get the win.

Marble Falls scored two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to take a 5-1 lead.

In the seventh inning, Vista Ridge got a rally going with a leadoff infield hit an hit batsman and a RBI fro the bottom three spots in the order. Leadoff Jake Hicks, who was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI for the Rangers.

Vista Ridge pulled to within a run, but Ridgely got out of the jam with a pair of fly outs to Jay Watson and Carson Bowen in the Marble Falls outfield.
